½ C shortening
1½ oz. bitter chocolate
1 C sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
½ C applesauce
1 tsp vanilla
1 C less 2 T flour
½ tsp baking powder
¼ tsp soda
½ tsp salt
½ C nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Melt shortening and chocolate over hot water (or in microwave).
Blend in sugar, eggs, applesauce and vanilla. Sift flour mixture
into hot mixtures. Add nuts. Bake at 350º for 40 minutes. Ovens
differ so check on the time.

Mom and Aunt Sally made these a lot. Very good and moist.
I don't usually sift flour in any of my recipes.
