3⅓ cups flour
1 teaspoon each ground ginger, cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt, ground nutmeg, and ground cloves
½ cup vegetable oil
½ cup butter, softened
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
½ cup light molasses
1 teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in ¼ cup warm water
1 cup each dark raisins, golden raisins and chopped walnuts.

Directions:

1. Stir together flour. cinnamon, ginger, salt, nutmeg and cloves. Combine well, set aside.
2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In bowl combine oil, butter, and sugars, beat until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating until fluffy after each addition. Blend in molasses.
3. Add flour mixture alternately with baking soda mixture, blending after each addition. Stir in raisins and walnuts.
4. Divide dough into 6 strips, each 1½" wide, ¾" thick about 2" apart, down the length of greased (or parchment paper-lined) cookie sheets.
5. Bake until toothpick inserted in center of each strip comes out barely clean (12 to 15 minutes). Let strips remain on baking sheet or wire racks 10 minutes, then cut, slightly on the diagonal, into 1" wide slices.

Perhaps it’s the molasses ( used in Boston baked beans) that brings me back to growing up in Boston and/or the savory spices from around the world that ground me in the present moment; hermits are special and delicious. Good with tea and wine.
