1 c shortening
2 c sugar
3 large eggs
2 1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 c buttermilk
2 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Beat shortening at medium speeding until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Combine flour, salt and soda; add to shortening mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed until blended after each addition. Beat a medium-high speed 2 minutes. Stir in vanilla. Bake until a wooden pick comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire rack 19 minutes before removing from pans. To make a chocolate buttermilk cake - substitute 1/2 c cocoa for 1/2 c flour.
