1 c shortening (i always use 1 cube margarine & 1 cube butter)
1 c white sugar
1 c brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
4 c Wheaties or corn flakes
1 c coconut

Bake 375º 9-11 minutes
Using mixer, mix the first five ingredients.
In another bowl mix the four dry ingredients.
Add the dry ingredients slowly to the egg/butter/sugar mixture.
When mixed well stir in the coconut and Wheaties.
Place rounded tsp. on baking sheet.
Cool 3 minutes before removing from pan.

Notes from Debbie: Use room temperature butter - the cookies are flatter & crispier.
You can add anything you want to this base-- I often add my favorite nuts, ½ c raisins, M & M's, chocolate chips, etc. I always double this recipe.
Notes from Brenda: Every vacation Ranger Cookies were taken along for the trip. They were a family favorite and always available for a snack. I know that Granny made them for the family of my five kids when they were young. The annual beach trip always included this cookie.
