9-in. double pie crust
6 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1/2 c. butter
1 T. all-purpose flour
2 T. cornstarch
2 T. water
1 T. vanilla extract
1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
3/4 c. dried cranberries

Preheat oven to 425º F. Press one pie crust into a 9-in. pie pan. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cornstarch to form a paste. Stir in 2 T. of water, along with vanilla, 1/2 c. white sugar, brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, and nutmeg; bring to a simmer. Add the apples and cranberries to the sugar mixture. Cook and stir 5 minutes; remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Pour the fruit mixture into the crust and spread evenly. Cover with top crust and seal edges. Vent crust and brush with milk. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the pie. Bake in oven for 15 minutes; reduce oven temperature to 350º F and continue baking until top crust is golden brown, another 35-40 minutes.
