1 c. (2 sticks) margarine
2 c. brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
3½ c. flour, sifted
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. baking powder
⅛ tsp. cinnamon
½ c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Date filling:
2 c. pitted dates, chopped
¾ c. granulated sugar
¾ c. water
½ c. chopped nuts, optional

Cream together the margarine and brown sugar. Add eggs and blend thoroughly. Stir in remaining dough ingredients. Mix well. For date filling, combine dates, granulated sugar, and water in a saucepan. Cook slowly until thickened, stir in nuts. Allow to cool. Preheat oven to 375º. Drop ⅔ of dough by teaspoonfuls onto a baking sheet. With a spoon, form a well in each mound of dough. Place about one teaspoonful of cooled date filling in each well. Drop another small portion of remaining ⅓ of dough over the filling of each mound. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes.
