Beef Stew with Dumplings Recipe

1 lb. stew beef cut in cubes
2 T. shortening
1 envelope onion soup mix
4 medium diced potatoes
4 carrots, sliced
1 stalk celery, sliced

1 c. flour
2 t. baking powder
t. salt
3 T. shortening
c. milk

Melt shortening. Coat meet in flour. Brown meat in dutch oven. Add 7 cups water and soup mix. Simmer 1-2 hours. Add vegetables and cook covered over medium heat for 20-25 minutes, until tender. Add thickening sauce made with c. flour (add water to flour until semi-thin). Stir.
Add dumplings, cover 10 minutes, uncover for 10 minutes.

For dumplings, mix flour, powder and salt, cut in shortening, stir in milk. Plop by tablespoons on hot liquid.
