1½ c. sifted flour
¼ tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. salt
½ c. butter or margarine
½ c. firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
¼ tsp. vanilla
⅛ tsp. maple flavoring
pecan halves
Frosting ingredients:
2 squares (2 oz.) unsweetened baking chocolate
¼ c. milk
1 tbsp. butter
1 c. sifted confectioners sugar

Preheat oven to 350°. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Cream well, butter or margarine, and brown sugar. Add to creamed mixture 1 whole egg, separate second egg and add yolk (reserve egg white). Beat well. Blend in vanilla and maple flavoring. Add dry ingredients, mix thoroughly. Chill if desired. Arrange pecan halves in groups of three or five making a sunburst or turtle pattern on a greased baking sheet. Mold dough into rounded teaspoon balls. Dip bottom of each ball into unbeaten egg white and press lightly into nuts. Tips of nuts should show once cookies are baked. Bake 10-12 minutes. Let cool then frost. Chocolate frosting: combine chocolate, milk, and butter in top of double boiler or gently microwave. Heat until chocolate melts. Add confectioners sugar. Beat until smooth and glossy. If too thin, add additional confectioners sugar.
