1 cup crisco
1 ½ cup sugar
2 eggs
1 oz. red food coloring (or 2 ½ oz bottle)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 Tbs. soda (scant the soda and put ¾ tsp. baking powder)
1 TBS cocoa
2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar, eggs & shortening. Add coloring, vanilla & vinegar. Then add dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk.
Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Bake in layers or loaf.

Date Frosting:

3 egg yolks
1 stick butter or oleo
1 cup sugar
1 cup carnation milk
1 8 oz. box of dates

Granny says: I seldom cut up the dates,but keep mashing them and stirring as it cooks and they cook up. Cook until it will hang onto your spoon.

All I remember about this was I thought it was a strange icing! LOL Everyone loved it though!
