1 cup shortening
1½ c brown sugar
2 eggs
½ cup buttermilk or sour milk

1¾ cups sifted all purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg + a pinch

3 cups rolled oats

Optional ingredients:
1 cup raisins
½ cup chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, brown sugar, eggs together until light and fluffy.
Stir in milk
Set aside

Stir together dry ingredients
Stir dry ingredients into creamed mixture a little at a time
Stir in oats and optional ingredients

Drop from teaspoon 2 inches apart onto lightly greased baking sheet.

Bake in HOT oven (400º) about 8 minutes. Cool slightly (Important as cookies are still cooking) and remove from pan.

Makes about 5 dozen cookies
*Or when using sweet milk reduce soda to ¼ teaspoon and use 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
