2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 tbsp. sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
½ cup shortening
1 egg, beaten
⅔ cup milk

Directions:
Directions:
Oven to 450º F. Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine egg and milk; add to flour mixture all at once. Stir until the dough follows the fork around the bowl.
Turn out onto lightly floured surface and knead gently with heel of hand, about 20 strokes. Roll dough to ¾ inch thickness. Dip 2-inch biscuit cutter into flour; cut straight down through the dough - no twisting. Bake 10 minutes or until golden brown.
