2½ cups flour
1½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
½ tsp salt
½ cup shortening
½ cup white sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses
1 cup hot water

mix all ingredients well
Bake in 350 degree oven for 50-55 min.
