4 to 5 slices of bread, cut into cubes to measure 3 cups
3 tbsp. butter
½ tsp. garlic salt

Directions:

Preheat oven to 225º F.
In ovenproof skillet (or pan), melt butter and stir in garlic salt. Add bread cubes, toss to coat. Place in a very slow oven about 2 hours or until dry and crisp.
Refrigerate in tightly covered container.
VARIATION: Use Ranch seasoning instead of garlic salt and add a little grated Parmesan cheese once croutons are cool.

Nowadays, the grocery stores have all sorts of packaged croutons. But, this is a recipe that my mother, Laura Simmons used to make homemade croutons before store-bought packages were common.
