¾ lb. walnuts, chopped & toasted
½ lb. citron, chopped
3 jars (1 lb. 12 oz.) spiced apple butter
3½ cups sugar
6 heaping Tbsp. sifted cocoa
3 cups bread crumbs
1 heaping Tbsp. of cinnamon

Dough:
15 large eggs (or 13 extra-large)
3½ cups sugar
1⅔ cups Crisco shortening, melted
1¼ cups water (added to melted Crisco)
5 lbs. flour
10 tsp. baking powder

Filling:
Chop the walnuts and citron.
Toast the walnuts.
Mix the walnuts, citron, spiced apple butter, sugar, cocoa, bread crumbs, and cinnamon.
Set aside.

Dough:
Preheat oven to 350º.
Place the flour on the counter or board in a ring and sprinkle the baking powder into the flour. Then sprinkle with sugar over the top.
Cut in the melted Crisco mixed with the water.
Beat in the eggs. Gradually work into the flour.
Mix the dough until smooth, then cover and let it rest for a minute.
Roll out the dough to ⅛-inch thickness.
Cut into rectangles measuring about 8" by 4".
Fill, fold over, and shape into a horseshoe and close the ends of the horseshoe. Then seal the edges all around the horseshoe by pressing with a fork.
Bake in the oven on floured cookie sheets for about 30 minutes until delicately brown.
[Optional] When done, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
