Pastry: for 12” to 13” crust pie
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt (omit if using self-rising flour)
⅔ cup plus 2 Tbsp. shortening
4 - 5 Tbsp. cold water

Middle:
6 - 7 tart apples
½ cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. nutmeg

Topping:
¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup sugar
½ cup firm butter or margarine

Pastry:
Measure flour and salt into a bowl.
Cut in shortening thoroughly; sprinkle in water 1Tbsp. at a time, mixing until all flour is moistened and dough almost cleans side of the bowl. (1 to 2 Tbsp. water can be added, if needed).
Heat oven to 450º degrees.
Roll pastry into 1” larger than pizza pan and place in pan. [Tip: If you do not have a pizza pan, just roll dough into 13”-14” circle; then place on an ungreased baking sheet.]

Middle:
Peel apples and cut into slices, about ½” thick.
Beginning at the edge of the crust and overlapping slices, cover the pie dough with apples.
Stir together sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; sprinkle over apple slices.

Topping:
Mix the flour, sugar, and butter together until crumbly, then sprinkle over pie.

Bake at 450º for 30 - 40 mins. or until edge is golden brown and apples are tender.
