1/2 cup margarine or shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg, well-beaten
1 cup dark molasses
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup hot water

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together margarine and sugar until fluffy
Add well beaten egg and molasses
Sift dry ingredients 3 times
Add alternately with hot water to creamed ingredients
Beat until smooth after each addition of flour
Pour into an 8" x 12" pan lined with oiled paper
Bake at 350ºF for 50 minutes
