2½ cups sifted cake flour
1½ cups sugar
3½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
½ cup Crisco soft shortening
¾ cup milk
¼ cup maraschino cherry juice
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp almond extract
4 egg whites (unbeaten)
18 well drained and finely chopped maraschino cherries
½ cup pecans (finely chopped)

Bake at 375º for 20 to 25 minutes
1. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into mixing bowl
2. Drop in soft shortening (no creaming needed)
3. Combine milk and maraschino juice in a separate container
4. Add ¾ cup of the mixed milk and maraschino juice into bowl
5. Add flavoring and extract
6. Beat 200 strokes by hand or use mixer at low speed
7. Scrape bowl, spoon, or beater
8. Add remaining liquid and the whites of two eggs – beat 200 strokes or 2 minutes by mixer
9. Add cherries and nuts and blend
10. Bake in two deep 9 inch greased heart shaped pans in a moderate oven – when done remove from oven
