1 c sugar
1 c molasses
1 c shortening and butter
2 c warm potato water
3 yeast cakes
4 T black pepper
8 c flour
1½ t salt

Directions:
Directions:
Melt shortening and set aside to cool. Measure salt and sugar and place them in a large mixing bowl. Pour the warm potato water into the bowl and stir to dissolve sugar and salt. Put yeast into a small bowl and add ½ c warm water. Let yeast soften for 5 minutes. Add the yeast, molasses and pepper to the warm water mixture. Add 3 c flour and beat until smooth. Add the cooled shortening and beat a few more strokes. Gradually add the remaining flour and knead until smooth and satiny. Lightly grease the large mixing bowl and place dough into bowl. Let dough rise to double. Punch down and let rise again. Shape into rolls. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

During World War 2 my parents owned their own business in California and thrived. Mom said she never had to use all of her war rations. I have her old ration books."
