This is one of Mary Lou's recipes that I found in my Mom's recipe box. My Mother would get the ammonia at the drug store. It had a definite ammonia flavor. I believe it looked like fine salt. I believe Grandma Hopp made what was called an ammonia cookie, but I haven't found the recipe. |

Notes: ***************************************************** FAMILY STORY - BAKER'S AMMONIA
Several recipes require ammonia. *From internet: When baker’s ammonia is not available, it can be replaced by baking soda or baking powder. To replace 1 teaspoon of baker’s ammonia, you can use 1 teaspoon baking powder or 1 teaspoon baking powder plus 1 teaspoon baking soda. The baker's ammonia makes it crisper. It is only used for cookies (or crackers) to make them crisp. Cakes are too thick and hold the ammonia smell. It is usually available at Walmart, Amazon and King Arthur's websites." *****************************************************
