1½ c. sugar
2 c. sifted cake flour
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
½ c. shortening
2 oz. red food coloring
1 c. buttermilk (divided)
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda
FROSTING:
¼ c. flour
⅛ tsp. salt
1 c. milk
1 c. powdered sugar
1½ sticks margarine
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
For cake, sift sugar, flour, cocoa and salt into a large bowl. Add shortening, red coloring and ⅔ c. of buttermilk. Beat two minutes at medium speed. Add eggs, remaining ⅓ c. of buttermilk and beat 1 minute at medium speed. Mix vinegar and soda. Stir into batter until completely mixed by hand. Pour into two 9" pans that have been greased, floured and lined with wax paper. Bake in 350º oven for 30 minutes or until done. For frosting, mix flour and salt. Add remaining milk gradually. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick. Cool. Add sugar, margarine and vanilla. Beat with mixer until fluffy.
