FAMILY STORY - MILK TO BUTTER

Stan (Skip) Miller says they raised cows in Chewelah for their own milk. They had Guernsey cows that have high butterfat in the milk. They kept it in gallon pickle jars in the refrigerator. Overnight a gallon of milk would develop 2 to 3 inches of cream on the top. Barbara would stir the cream back into the milk before pouring it into a glass. After 2 or 3 stirrings, clumps of butter would form on top of the milk. When they drank the milk, the kids wound up with chunks of butter on their teeth or on top of their cereal.
