"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

5 t baking powder
1 t salt
2 T sugar
2 eggs, beaten
½ c shortening
Enough milk to make dough stiff
Cinnamon and sugar mixture

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together into a mixing bowl. Add shortening and blend together as for biscuits. Add beaten eggs with milk and mix with a spoon, just so dough and milk-egg mixture is thoroughly mixed. Roll out on board and cut into strips about 2 inches wide. Twist and fry in hot deep fat oil until brown on each side or drop by tablespoon into fat. Using a long, slotted spoon remove to paper towel, shaking off fat. When just warm enough to handle, roll in sugar or a sugar-cinnamon mixture or eat plain. (This recipe is in Mom, Lydia Hopp's, handwriting.)
