2 lbs stewing beef (cut into 3/4 inch cubes)
1 pkg onion soup mix
1 Oxo cube
1 bay leaf
1 c carrots (cut in 1/2 inch cubes)
1 c turnips (cut in 1/2 inch cubes)
1/2 c celery stalks (but in 1/2 inch lengths)
6 medium potatoes (cut in halves)

In a very hot, well-greased cast iron frying pan, place all beef and stir continuously for 10 minutes over medium heat. Remove immediately and place beef in a 4 qt stewing pot in which should be placed 1 c cold water. Place this on lowest heat for 30 min. Then add Oxo cube (unmelted), onion soup mix, and one bay leaf. Simmer on lowest heat for a further 45 min. Add carrots, turnips, celery and potatoes and c ontinue simmering for 40 min. DO NOT ADD SALT.
