½ cup shortening
1½ cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 oz. red food coloring
2½ cups sifted flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp vanilla

Frosting
1 cup milk
¼ cut flour
1 cup sugar
½ cup softened butter
½ cup shortening
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cake: Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, cocoa, food coloring, flour, salt, buttermilk and vanilla. Mix vinegar and soda together and then stir in last. Bake at 350º for 30 to 35 minutes.

Frosting: combine milk and flour and cook in saucepan over medium heat until thick. Mix together 1 cup sugar, butter and shortening and beat until fluffy with high speed. Add the white sauce mixture and 1 tsp. vanilla.

Note: according to the internet, butter or margarine are substitutes for shortening, but consistency may be affected.
