Directions:
Grease and flour tube or Bundt pan. Set aside. Allow butter to soften at room temperature. Cream butter and gradually add sugar, while beating constantly until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after addition.
Sift all purpose flour and measure. Mix cut dates, cut orange slices, coconut and chopped nuts into flour; stir and blend evenly. Stir soda into buttermilk. Blend and add half fruit and flour mixture to creamed mixture with buttermilk; blend and add remaining half of fruit and flour mixture. Batter will be stiff, making a wooden spoon ideal for mixing. Spoon batter in prepared pan. As is filled press mixture firmly down into pan. Level top with spatula.
Bake in low 300 oven for 1 hour 45 minutes. Oven rack should be about 5 inches from bottom of oven. Make a glaze of powdered sugar and a little orange juice. Grate one orange and sprinkle over cake. Pour glaze over cake while warm.
