1/2 CUP BOILING WATER
2 STICKS BUTTER
2 CUPS SUGAR
4 EGG YOLKS, BEATEN
1 TSP VANILLA
2 1/2 CUPS CAKE FLOUR, SIFTED
1 TSP SODA
1/2 TSP SALT
1 CUP BUTTERMILK
4 EGG WHITES, BEATEN STIFF

COCONUT PECAN FILLING & FROSTING
1 CUP EVAPORATED MILK
3 EGG YOLKS
1 STICK BUTTER
1 TSP VANILLA
1 CUP CHOPPED PECANS
1 1/2 CUPS COCONUT

MELT CHOCOLATE IN BOILING WATER; COOL. CREAM BUTTER AND SUGAR UNTIL LIGHT AND FLUFFY. ADD YOLKS, ADD VANILLA, MELTED CHOCOLATE. MIX TO BLEND.
SIFT FLOUR, SODA, SALT; ADD DRY INGREDIENTS TO CHOCOLATE MIXTURE, ALTERNATING WITH BUTTERMILK. BEAT WELL AFTER EACH ADDITION. BEAT TILL SMOOTH. FOLD IN STIFFLY BEATEN EGG WHITES. POUR INTO 3 (8 OR 9 INCH) GREASED WAXED PAPERED PANS. BAKE AT 350 DEGREES FOR 35 TO 40 MINUTES.

FROSTING:
MIX TOGETHER MILK, EGG YOLKS, BUTTER AND VANILLA. COOK OVER MEDIUM HEAT, STIRRING CONSTANTLY, UNTIL THICK- 10 TO 12 MINUTES. ADD PECANS AND COCONUT, BEAT UNTIL THICK ENOUGH TO SPREAD BETWEEN LAYERS AND OVER TOP, DO NOT ICE SIDES. MAKES 2 1/2 CUPS.
