1½ cups sugar
½ cup shortening
1 cup milk
2 cups all purpose flour, sifted well before measuring (do not tamp down)
½ teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 egg whites, beaten until stiff

Directions:
Directions:
--Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy

--Add milk, mix well

--Add flour, baking powder and salt and mix well

--Fold in egg whites

--Add vanilla extract

--Bake in greased and floured pans in a 350ºF oven for 27-35 minutes

--Remove from oven and allow to cool

--Spread filling between layers, Frost with 7 minute frosting

--Set aside for 2 days before serving
 

Lane Cake Filling


Ingredients:

12 egg yolks
2 cups sugar
½ cup butter
1 cup raisins or ½ cup raisins and ½ cup chopped dates
1 cup pecans, chopped
6 ounces Bourbon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

--Beat egg yolks and sugar together

--Cook in top of double boiler until thick

--Add fruit, pecans, Bourbon and vanilla extract, mix well
