1 cup shortening
2 cups of sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp. peppermint extract
½ tsp. salt
3 cups sifted flour
¾ cup buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vinegar
¼ cup crushed peppermint candy
½ tsp. red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325º.
Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time; beating well after each.
Stir in peppermint extract and salt.
Beginning and ending with flour, add flour and buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture.
Combine baking soda and vinegar then add.
Fold in crushed candy.
Tint ⅓ of batter with red food coloring.
Alternately spoon pink and plain batter into greased and floured 10" tube pan. Cut through batter with knife to give streaked effect.
Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and cool in pan for 10-15 minutes.
Remove from pan.
Sprinkle top with additional candy.
Cool completely.
