2 T butter
1-1/2 c chopped onion
1 bay leaf
1/2 t dried thyme
4 c potato, cut into 1/2" chunks
1/8 t pepper
1 c milk
chicken broth
salt to taste

Directions:
Melt butter over medium heat. Add onion, bay leaf and thyme. Cook 3-5 min.
Add potato, broth and pepper. Bring to boil and simmer, uncovered 15 minutes. Discard bay leaf. Remove half of the soup. Puree remaining soup in a blender. Return all to pan, add milk. Season to taste.

Mom does not give an amount of chicken broth. I am assuming it is enough to cover the potatoes to cook them.
