1 1/2 c. dates
1 1/4 c. boiling water
2 T. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
2 3/4 c. pastry flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. chopped nuts
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Quarter dates and pour boiling water over them. Add shortening, sugar, and salt. When cool, add egg, and flour sifted with baking soda and cream of tartar. Then add nuts and vanilla. Gently combine ingredients. Bake in loaf pan at 350º for 1 hour.
