2 lb boneless beef chuck cut in cubes
1 small bay leaf
2 tsp salt
4 cups hot water
tsp. pepper
1tsp lemon juice
pinch allspice
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. sugar
1 clove garlic, minced (or garlic powder)
6 carrots, quartered
1 medium onion quartered
3 to 4 potatoes peeled & cut in 8ths
Dash of dried onion

Roll beef cubes in flour and brown meat thoroughly in 1 to 2 tbsp. oil in large kettle. Add remaining ingredients except carrots, onion and potatoes. Simmer 1 hour and 45 minutes. Add more water if needed. Add carrots, onion and potatoes increase heat and cook about hour or until vegetables are tender.

Dumplings from Bisquick
2 Cups Bisquick Mix
2/3 Cup Milk

Makes 10 dumplings.
After dishing out her dumplings, Mavis likes to add pancake syrup, Mike likes them with butter and stew gravy. Another great winter meal!

If you want to add dumplings:

Just after adding vegetables make dumplings using Bisquick baking mix and milk.
Stir until soft dough forms. Drop by spoonfuls into boiling stew. Reduce heat; cook uncovered 10 minutes. Cover cook 10 minutes longer.
