½ pound dried navy beans
2 ounces salt pork, sliced (bacon)
1½ cup cubed ham
1 quart water
1 medium onion, sliced
1½ cup hot water
salt and pepper to taste
Ham bones for flavor (if you have them)

Directions:
Directions:
Wash beans thoroughly, cover with cold water, and soak overnight. Drain and put in kettle. Add salt pork, water, ham bones and ham. Heat to boiling, cover, simmer about 1½ hour. Add onion the last half-hour of cooking. Remove bones, cut off any meat and return to soup. Add remaining water and salt and pepper. Reheat.

Croutons: two slices bread cut in cubes. Brown in ¼ cup margarine and ½ teaspoon garlic salt. Add to soup just before serving.
