1½ cups sugar

½ cup shortening (regular or butter flavor Crisco)

2 eggs

2¼ cups cake flour

pinch of salt

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 Tablespoon cocoa

¼ c red food coloring

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vinegar

ICING

3 Tablespoons flour

1 cup evaporated milk or regular milk

1 cup sugar

½ cup shortening

½ cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 8 inch or 9 inch cake pans

Pre heat oven 350º

Mix together the first 3 ingredients, then add cake flour, salt, buttermilk,and vanilla, Mix well.

Mix food coloring and cocoa, then fold in baking soda and vinegar.

Combine all ingredients together and pour in prepared cake pans. Bake at 350º

If using 9" pans bake for 30-35 min. 8" pans for 40-45 min.

FROSTING

Mix together flour and milk, cook in pan until it thickens then set aside

Beat together sugar, shortening, butter, and vanilla, then add the flour mixture and beat until fluffy

Frost cooled cakes.
