The Wedding Night

Joe and Bertha dated when they were quite young. They would meet in the woods without anyone knowing it and leave each other notes hidden behind or under a certain rock. When they decided to get married, Joe was the sole support and lived at home with his mother, who we are told, was a very domineering German lady. So Joe did not tell her that they were going to get married.

He picked Bertha up with the horse and buggy and they went to the county seat which was about fourteen miles away. This was in 1917. They got married by a judge in a civil ceremony. They went back home. Joe left Bertha in the buggy and went into the house to tell his mother that they had gotten married.

Her reply, “Well, where is she, Joe? Bring her in.” So Joe got Bertha and brought her inside. His mother looked at them and said, “OK. Tomorrow you go to church and get married proper by the priest. Tonight, Joe, your room is upstairs. Bertha, you sleep with me. “ So, Bertha slept her wedding night with her mother-in-law.
