Ingredients: 1 cup Crisco 2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk 2½ cup flour 2 t. baking soda ½ t. salt ½ cup cocoa 1 t. vanilla 1 cup boiling water

Directions: |
Directions:In your mixer cream together crisco, sugar and eggs. Add sour milk or buttermilk and mix. In a large bowl sift or whisk together flour, soda, salt and cocoa. Add to mixer and mix together. Add vanilla, then add boiling water last. Pour in prepared cake pan and bake in preheated oven at 350º 35 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean. |

Ingredients: 2 cups sugar 2 squares melted chocolate ½ cup milk Pinch salt 1 t. Karo syrup 2 T. butter 1 t. vanilla Cream to soften

Directions: |
Directions:Put all ingredients, except butter and vanilla, in sauce pan and cook stiring constantly till soft boil stage. Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla. Beat till spreading consistancy. If it hardens, add 1 t. of cream at a time. |

Notes: Soft-ball stage refers to a specific temperature range when cooking sugar syrups, occurring between 235 and 245 F. In addition to using a candy thermometer, this stage can be determined by dropping a spoonful of hot syrup into a bowl of very cold water. In the water, use your fingers to gather the cooled syrup into a ball. If it has reached soft-ball stage, the syrup easily forms a ball while in the cold water but flattens once removed from the water.
