1½ cup sugar
½ cup vegetable shortening
2 cup sifted cake flour
2 T. cocoa
1 t. salt
1 ounce water mixed with 1 ounce red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla
1 T. vinegar
1 t. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Combine sugar, shortening, flour, cocoa, salt.
Premix water and food coloring and ⅔ cup buttermilk in mixing bowl.
Add to mixture and beat until well blended.
Add eggs, remainder of buttermilk and vanilla and beat one minute.
Mix vinegar and soda and stir in to batter by hand. Do not beat.
Pour into 2 prepared 9" pans. Bake 30 minutes in preheated 350º oven.

1 cup milk
¼ cup flour
⅛ t. salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter
1 t. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
In a saucepan, combine flour and salt and add milk gradually.
Cook while stirring, until thick.
Cool and beat with mixer.
Add sugar, butter and vanilla.
Beat until fluffy.
Spread on cake and garnish with nuts or cocoa.
