1 3/4 c sifted cake flour
1 c unsweetened applesauce
1 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cloves
1/2 c shortening
1 c sugar
1 egg beaten

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, soda, salt and spices together three times. Cream shortening with sugar until fluffy. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredients and applesauce alternately in small amounts beating well after each addition. Pour into greased 8 x 8 pan. Bake 350º for 45 to 60 minutes.

Frost with favorite icing.

Omit cinnamon and cloves, reduce allspice and nutmeg to 1/2 tsp each. Add 1 cup raisins

Omit allspice and cloves, reduce cinnamon to 1 teaspoon and nutmeg to 1/2 teaspoon. Add 1 cup chopped raisins and 1/2 cup chopped nuts.
