Cake:
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
5 eggs, separated
1/2 cup shortening
1 stick butter
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups coconut
1 cup chopped nuts

Frosting:
1-8 oz cream cheese
1/2 stick butter
1 lb pkg powdered sugar
Vanilla.

Directions:

Sift together flour and salt.
Mix baking soda and buttermilk and let stand for a short while.
Beat egg whites stiff and set aside.
Cream shortening, butter and sugar.
Add egg yolks, one at a time.
Add flour alternately with the buttermilk.
Add vanilla.
Fold in egg whites.
Add coconut and nuts.
Bake in oblong pan for 1 hour at 300º or in 3 layers for 35 minutes at 350º.
Frost cooled cake.
