Where did the Leighs come from? I thought this was the Thompson section.

When I started writing this book, I thought I would do one section for each side of our families. As I began researching the Thompson tree, I found it did not go back very far only 2 or 3 generations.

For some reason (I think it was all the hint leaves that popped up), I started tracing Great-Grandma, Bertha Hope. When I finished, I felt like the commercial that says "O, my, I am the cousin of so and so." It turns out, Bertha is the direct descendant of a Revolutionary War Patriot. I went back even further to find the previous two generations were in the militia and the one before that was awarded 400 acres for transporting to Virginia from England. As I read documents on my relatives, I found not only the Patriot, John Zachariah Leigh, but also a Spanish American War veteran, Charles Thompson, a Civil War veteran (Yankee), Albert Gallatin, and a New Brethren minister, Isaiah Thompson.

All the while I was researching, Mom kept telling me to be careful shaking the family tree because you couldn't be sure what nuts would fall out. Oops!
