Hertzyer (Hearts) Recipe

2 c. sugar
3 c. thick cream
¾ c. shortening
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
4-6 c. flour
Egg Wash:
1 egg yolk
a little sugar
few drops water

Directions:
Directions:
1. Mix first 3 ingredients.
2. Add flour to make stiff cookie dough.
3. Chill overnight.
4. Turn dough onto floured board, roll out about ½ inch thick.
5. Cut into 1x4 inch strips, split leaving ½ inch uncut, and turn strips in opposite direction to shape into hearts.
6. Brush with egg wash.
7. Bake at 375º for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.

Traditionally this recipe was made with really thick farm cream but since that’s not really an option anymore, Francie says Walmart’s heavy cream is the thickest she’s found. Dianna says to use crème fresh (if you can get it) or a mixture of 2 cups mascarpone and 1 cup heavy cream. Francie also says she doesn’t use the egg wash.
