1½ cups raisins
1½ cups dates (chopped)
2 cups sugar
2 cups boiling water
5 Tbs. lard

3 cups flour
1 cup candied fruit
1 cup nuts
1 tsp. Baking soda
1 tsp. Cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
Put first 5 ingredients into a pan and bring to a boil; then simmer for 20 minutes.

Cool. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Fill 4 buttered individual tins or 2 buttered loaf size pans and bake 1½ hours in 300º F oven.

While still warm, wrap cakes in cheese cloths soaked with rum or brandy and then wrap in foil to keep.

Best to make about 6 weeks prior to the holidays. Keep checking to see if you need to replenish the liquor on the cheesecloth to keep it moist.
