"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

A shake of nutmeg
Pinch of salt
2 or 3 T. more of brown sugar

Directions:
Mix the flour with the 1 c. brown sugar. Take out ½ cup of the mixture. To it add ½ c. chopped walnuts, a few shakes of cinnamon, a shake of nutmeg, a pinch of salt, and 2 or 3 T. more of brown sugar. Set this aside. To the remaining 2 c. of dry mixture add salad oil, buttermilk (or sour milk), eggs, granulated sugar, baking soda, ½ tsp. salt, and tsp. cinnamon. Beat well. Pour into a greased and floured 9” x 13” baking pan. Sprinkle the reserved dry topping evenly over the batter. Dribble (I think Mom meant drizzle) the melted butter over the top. Bake in a 350º oven for 40-50 minutes.
