2 packages (4 ½ teaspoons) active dry yeast
½ cup warm water (110°F)
½ cup milk
½ cup honey
½ cup butter
1 teaspoon salt
5 ½ to 6 cups flour
3 eggs
½ cup golden raisins
½ cup currents
¼ chopped citron
2 to 3 teaspoons anise seed, crushed
1 tablespoon orange or lemon peel
2 tablespoons pine nuts

Soften yeast in warm water. Heat milk, honey, butter, and salt till butter melts; cool to lukewarm. Stir in 2 cups of the flour; beat well. Add soften yeast and 3 eggs; beat well. Stir in raisins, currents, citron, anise seed, orange peel, and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Stir in pine nus. Knead on floured surface until smooth, 8 to 10 minutes.

Shape into a ball. Place in greased bowl, turn once. Cover; let rise in warm place until doubled in size, about 1 ½ hours. Punch down; divide in half. Cover; let rest 10 minutes. Shape in 2 round loaves; place on two greased baking sheets. Cut a cross ½-inch deep on each loaf. Cover; let rise until doubled in size, about 45 minutes. Beat 1 egg with 1 tablespoon water; brush tops. Bake at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from baking sheets; cool on rack.
