8 stale bread slices
½ cup butter or margarine

Directions:
Lay bread on counter. Spread both sides lightly with butter. Stack slices 2 or 4 high. Cut into ½" cubes. Arrange on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in 300ºF oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden brown. Stir occasionally while browning. If you prefer you can stir fry these to brown. Makes 4 cups.

Parmesan croutons: Sprinkle both sides of buttered bread with grated parmesan. Run knife over after each sprinkle.

Seasoned croutons: Mix ½ tsp. seasoned salt with butter before buttering.

Garlic croutons: Mix ½ tsp. garlic salt with butter before buttering.

Herb croutons: Mix ¼ tsp. each of garlic powder, whole oregano and sweet basil with butter before buttering bread.
