6 medium size baking apples
2 c. flour
2½ t. baking powder
½ t. salt

2 c. brown sugar

¼ c. butter
¼ t. cinnamon
¼ t. nutmeg

Directions:
Pare apples and cut in half, or slice. To make pastry, sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in shortening until particles are about the size of small peas. Sprinkle milk over mixture and press together lightly, working dough only enough to hold together. Roll dough as pastry and cut into 12 squares. Place half an apple on each square. Fill cavity of apple with cinnamon and sugar. Pat dough around apple half to cover completely. Place in greased baking dish one inch apart.
To make sauce, combine brown sugar, water and spices in a saucepan and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add butter. Pour sauce over apple dumplings. Bake at 375º for 35-40 minutes, basting occasionally.
