1½ c. sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp baking soda (make sure it is fresh and room temperature..not the one you keep in your fridge to eliminate odors!)
1 tsp. vinegar
2 oz. red food coloring
1 c. buttermilk
½ c. shortening
2 c. Wondra Flour (no other type flour)
1 T. cocoa
3 cake pans, 8”, greased and floured

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together sugar, salt, shortening, and eggs. Add flour and cocoa, and mix. Add buttermilk alternately with dry ingredients. Then add vanilla extract and food coloring. Beat by hand. Add vinegar and baking soda, and mix well. Pour evenly into the 3 prepared cake pans. Bake at 375º for 25 mins.
Frosting: put 1 c.milk and 1/4 c. flour into a jar, put the lid on and shake until well-mixed. Place in a small saucepan and cook to a paste. Then let COOL COMPLETELY. In a mixing bowl, cream together 1 c. sugar and 1 c. butter. Add vanilla extract. Add the cooled flour mixture to the mixing bowl and beat together. Frost when cake has cooled.

Ma has made this cake for Dan for years. When he was in Vietnam Nam, she made him a cake and sent it overseas. It arrived in crumbs, but he enjoyed every bite!
