Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2-4 c. pinto beans
4-8 c. water
1 tbsp. salt
3-4 tbsp. Crisco (vegetable shortening) or lard or bacon grease

Directions:
Directions:
Place beans and water in a large pot (Dutch oven), add salt and bring to boil. Cover and simmer about 4 hours, adding more water if needed. Beans are done when they are soft but not mushy. Melt Crisco and add beans, using a slotted spoon to scoop from pot. On a medium heat, once Crisco is hot, mash beans with a potato masher. Add water from pot so you can get the consistency you want. If you should add too much water, just let water evaporate. Beans can also be cooked in a Crockpot - high for 6-8 hours then mashed in frying pan.
