8 cups Jonathan apples peeled and sliced
½ sugar
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Topping:
½ cup butter
½ cup brown sugar
½ flour

Directions:
Directions:
In a large bowl, toss the apples with the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice. Pour into an unbaked pie shell and pat down.


Combine the butter, flour and sugar. With a pastry blender or two knives, cut the butter into the flour-sugar mixture until the crumbs are the size of peas. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples and pat it down all around the edges of the pie.

Bake on bottom rack with placed on a foiled covered cookie sheet. Bake at 425º for about 50 minutes.

A perfectly-baked pie with not under-baked apples, burned crust, or messy clean-up! I think this recipe would also work without the paper bag.
