Meatballs:
1 lb. lean ground beef
½ cup bread crumbs
1 egg well beaten
¼ cup milk
salt and pepper to taste
Herbs, spices or onion to taste

Sweet and Sour Sauce:
½ cup ketchup
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup vinegar
2 cups water(I use ½ cup pineapple juice and just 1½ water)
2 Tbsp. cornstarch for thickening

Directions:

Combine the first 6 ingredients. Mix well and roll into walnut- sized balls.
Sauté in hot oil, about 2 tbsp. until browned.
For the sauce- Mix ingredients together and heat.
To thicken the sauce add 2 Tbsp. cornstarch mixed with 2 Tbsp. water.
Whisk until the mixture comes to a full boil and is slightly thicker.
Pour the sauce over the meatballs and simmer for 10 - 15 minutes.
Serve with mashed potatoes or rice and a cabbage salad or a second hot vegetable.

This recipe is from Hugh and Grace Goudy who were our neighbors when we lived on the farm north of Stoughton. It was published in the Stoughton Drop In Centre Cookbook around 1981.
