¼ c. shortening
½ c. sugar
½ c. molasses
1 tsp. baking soda
½ c. hot water
2 c. flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. ginger
½ tsp. nutmeg
½ tsp. cloves
½ tsp. cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400º. Cream together shortening, sugar and molasses. Dissolve baking soda in hot water (soda foams) and stir into sugar/shortening/molasses mixture. Sift together flour, salt, and spices. Stir into batter. Cover and chill dough for several hours or overnight. Drop from teaspoon about 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake until set....when touched lightly with finger almost no imprint remains, about 10 minutes; cake-like cookie that is delicious frosted.
